Mass. racer killed at Minot cycle track

Motocross riders and fans from across New England mourned the loss of one of their own last week following a June 14 motorcycle accident at Hemond's Moto-X Park in Minot.

Dan Arnold, 36, of Southwick, Mass., died June 15 at Central Maine Medical Center after sustaining head injuries the day before when he failed to negotiate a turn and fell about 20 feet.

"Dan had a really big, giving personality. He was very involved in his community," said Sgt. Kevin Bishop of the Southwick Police Department. In addition to watching Arnold grow up in Southwick, Bishop raced with him on the weekends.

"He was a good, clean, aggressive rider. I loved racing with him," Bishop said.

Sgt. Joe Mills of the Maine State Police said that the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife handled the initial accident investigation and that the crash is now being reviewed by the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupation Safety and Health Administration.

According to Mills, the accident occurred at 1:17 p.m. on June 14. He said that witnesses reported that Arnold lost control going around a corner, went off the track and fell about 20 feet down an embankment.

Bishop said that nine riders were scheduled to race with Arnold the day of the accident. The off-road motorcycle racing event was sanctioned by the New England Sports Committee and that more than 200 motorcyclists in a wide range of classes competed that day at Hemond's.

Bishop said each racing organization has referees who oversee races to ensure that riders are following rules. Track owners are responsible for overseeing their race courses.

"It's horrible. We feel absolutely horrible," said park owner Serae Hemmond. "We wish it never happened. It's beyond awful. We're deeply saddened by this."

Hemmond said it was the first fatal accident to occur at the 1.5-mile off-road motorcycle course since it opened in 2002. She was unaware of an OSHA review of the accident.

most likely.. the trail ran by there how or thru there land. so people think they can set traps. we used to get somewhat the same thing mountian biking.. rope across the trail.. brush and limbs cover the trail. pretty stupid!!

Make that three, there was a 13 year old boy in Western Mass that hit something that it sounds like a booby trap on the trail and passed away too. It's on the NEDB forum and there is talk of a bunch of the guys putting together a reward fund for aprehenson and conviction of the scum bag.

Wow this makes 2 in one week as the fresstyle community just lost a rider a couple days ago. Thoughts and prayers go out to his fam and friends.

I am not sure of everything, but it was something with his spinal cord. They say he was unconscious immediately after the crash and there was no brain activity.

i think they(family) wanted to keep it low key. isnt it funny that when you want to find something in the news, you cant. its all gas prices and iraq. never anything that happens around here.

Wow, I'm sorry to hear this horrible news. I didn't know him personally but I definitely recognize him, I'm assuming from racing NESC and Southwick. I can't believe there was nothing on the local news or in the newspapers about this. It really bothers me.

as a mom of a son who races I know in the back of my mind this could occur, but I am usually worried when he falls did he break his leg,arm etc...So when something like this happens it really makes you take a step back.

From what I have heard it was one of those "just landed the wrong way" type accidents. Not one of those Doug Henry type of accidents. We in the Factory Five Racing Cobra community just also lost a good friend that resides on the West coast in another strange incident. He loaded his 130lb crossbow, raised to fire it and the crossbow blew apart! Not missfired, but just broke apart into many pieces! Killed him instantly. Left a 18 month and a 6 year old daughter. Thinking of Tim Russert, sometimes you have to believe that someone upstairs just calls your number and hopefully it's for a better cause.

its something that no one wants... but it is possible to happen. i feel sorry for the family.. but i feel real bad for the Hemond family. i know they are very upset buy this. lets hope this NEVER happens again.

Vey sad to hear that, I was at the race saturday when that happened, I didn't see it, but know there was alot of concern there. My deepest sympathy goes out to the family and friends.

My deepest sympathy's go out to the family of Dan Arnold, rider #72.

He crashed at Hemonds on Saturday, June 14th, which resulted in his death on Sunday. I have been looking for any postings letting us know where we can send cards, if there will be a funeral open to the public, if Hemonds was taking donations to go towards the funeral etc....If anyone knows anything could you please post.
