At 52 I feel that if I don't ride I may be safer skeleton wise, but my cholesterol will go throught the roof sitting in front of the TV on Sundays putting my emotions in the hands of a bunch of overpaid NFL, NBA and MLB players while sucking down Doritos. Sure you may be laying in the hospital recovering from surgery, but I would take knee surgery over open heart surgery anyday! I have always lived with the feeling that when I die, I want the doctors to say "Organ donor?" "There isn't any parts on this guy that are not used up already!" To live your life being "scared" about getting hurt is no life at all. Of course you could go to the extreme like Travis Pastrana. Imagine what he is gonna feel like getting up in the morning when he hits 50!

RE: Practice crash on 7/3

Hey Jeff, that's good to hear, glad your feeling at least a little better. I quit riding after I badly broke my leg in 1985 at a race in Middleboro when I was 19, and didn't pick it up again until 2 years ago at almost 40. 20 years off a bike, I missed out on a lot of good riding time!! Heal fast, hope to see you out there next year! I'm sitting here in a brace writing this. There have been three trips to various emergency rooms so far for pain management, ultrasounds, ct's, bloodwork, you name it its been poked and prodded. I think what hurts the most is the idea of not riding anymore, no matter how poorly I felt before swinging a leg over the bike I always felt 100% better after sweating out some good laps.

I'll ride again, probably not this year because even if I heal up in time I've got some serious catching up to do with work, the evils of being self employed! I just want you guys to know its the words of encouragement that helped me make up my mind, had it not been for that I would have just hung it up for good and regretted it the rest of my life.

Thanks again for the support, kind words and everybody that helped out, I WILL see you all back at the track.

jeff

RE: Practice crash on 7/3

I agree.....I broke at least 6 ribs and collarbone on left side in May 2002. While in MMC overnight, I actually roomed with a guy I new from 1983 racing NESC that crashed while riding alone breaking his lower leg in 20 places. He told me he sold his bikes while in the hospital and recommended I do the same. Given the pain I was in, the thought did cross my mind, however, I refused not to sell then on a reactionary basis. I decided to wait until I was totally healed (had to have surgery Dec 02) and still decided to keep the bike. It is a sickness.....something that is very very hard to just completely give up. Sometime, I suppose I will have to, but prefer not to think about.

Hang in there, and never forget how good it feels to jamb with your buddies!! You will decide to ride again.:):)

RE: Practice crash on 7/3

Don't shut down completely yet. Take time and fix yourself. This is not a hobbie, it is a sickness. If you seriously can't ride (and only you will know) then you will be drawn in to another venue. This sport is nuts. Take this from a guy that was never suppose to "walk right" again back in the late "70's" But as always use common sense and enjoy the sport in any way possible. Heal well Grasshopper.

RE: Practice crash on 7/3

Sorry to hear about the crash Jeff, that really sucks, those ambulance rides are the worst!! You were riding really well toward the end of last year too. If there's anything I can do to help you out, let me know. I was the one that launched through the double double after the 70 effectively wadding up my 450 and insuring the most painful ambulance ride I have ever had. It was a freak thing, burped the throttle going over the first roller while following my daughter and instead of the tire breaking loose and spinning it hooked full traction catching me off guard and pinning me on the throttle which is why the crash was so violent. I technically broke my back in the crash, compression fracture of L1 and I wouldn't wish this on anyone but it could have been worse.

Special thanks to Bill Stuart for being right there, scary stuff laying on a track and not being able to get up. Thanks to Levi and Josh too for helping my son get all the gear back into the truck and lastly I want to thank all of the other riders for voluntarily shutting down the track until the ambulance got me out of the way. You guys and gals didn't have to do that but it's just more reinforcement of what a tight knit community we motocrosses live in. Unfortunately this crash pretty much ended my riding for good, so I'll be going back to wrenching and coaching the kids. It's ok, as long as I can still get to a track from time to time I'll be happy.

Again, thanks to everybody that was at the track, it feels good knowing there is still some hope for humanity.

Jeff Vaillancourt
457 vet
