He said the bike was MINT in fact he was bombing around on it just before I picked it up last night and he was really impressed with it. His theory is the coolant was topped off and leaks until it's down to the level of the top of the fins inside the radiator. My 450 doesn't do that and I can leave it full to the top of the cap. Apparently the 250 is different. Anyway I'm knocking on wood that it doesn't happen again and I was crazy. It cost me $66 for the reassurance.

RE: Honda CRF250 Leaking Coolant

warm up the bike just a little bit then do a pressure test on the radaitor,if the head gasket is leaking it should show up if the pressure drops fast. also a cylender leak down test not a compression test can show a bad head gasket.

jim.

RE: Honda CRF250 Leaking Coolant

If none has been added it may have been overfilled before and is now at the correct level after overflowing some.

RE: Honda CRF250 Leaking Coolant

I took it to Powerwheelz today and it's not leaking for them and they can't find anything wrong with it. The coolant level is now down one inch from the top of the resevoir. They think I'm nuts but twice when I started it it leaked steady like a stream of pee after a few minutes of idling.

RE: Honda CRF250 Leaking Coolant

Pat let us know what the final verdict is on that. My guess would be the gasket blocking the flow of the water, wrong gasket or put in wrong. I would also guess the water pump (for lack of a better term) may not be working for some reason. Either way I hope you get it fixed without much money involved.

RE: Honda CRF250 Leaking Coolant

Pat, have you checked the tech articles at thumpertalk.com?

RE: Honda CRF250 Leaking Coolant

thats cuz u was ridin it fasttt. u see my superman into the sand yesterday.. that needed some pics haha

RE: Honda CRF250 Leaking Coolant

yeah my bike was pissin antifreezeeee YAYYYYY!:D

RE: Honda CRF250 Leaking Coolant

i overheated my yzf yesterday riding with nick.. rev limiter:)

is it new pat? nicks 06 overheated once when we were riding as well.. probably cuz its a new bike though etc..

RE: Honda CRF250 Leaking Coolant

Nick I was told Derek's problem was also the head gasket.

Yes the radiator was filled to the top with coolant. I haven't looked at the spark plug yet as I have to take the gas tank off to get to it. I'm bringing it to a mechanic Tuesday I just hope it's not and endless mystery and a compression check will get to the bottom of it.

RE: Honda CRF250 Leaking Coolant

Was the radiator filled to the top when you started the bike? could it just be expansion?
A head gasket can put coolant into the oil, but it is possible depending on where the leak
is for compression to force combustion gasses into the water jacket and not into the oil passages.

RE: Honda CRF250 Leaking Coolant

What's the plug look like? I tried putting a different radiator cap from my CRF450 but that didn't work. Somebody told me it's probably a bad head gasket but another said that the oil should look cloudy if that's the case which it doesn't.

Any theories?
