Two part question.

#1 - Can someone get me some dimensions off their Showas? Specifically I'm looking for lengths of the 37mm inverts on most of the 85cc class machines. I'd like to know the length from the top of the lower clamp to the bottom of the upper stanchion, as well as the length from there to the axle. I'm doing a custom application and would like something better/beefier than 35mm Marzocchi Shivers, but I need to make sure I can get the forks short enough to fit.

#2 - Any of the local suspension guru's up for cutting the travel on said forks? I know I'll need custom springs as well. Ideally I'd like to work with someone who can possibly make a custom clamp set, as well as an axle, spaces, and caliper bracket to fit a wheel I've got. If someone can ballpark pricing on any bit of this, I'd love to know so I can estimate how much my sickness is about to cost me. : )

It's actually for a road raced CRF70.

http://www.x386.net/TTR/media/06Rebuild/06-15Bike/HPIM0409.JPG

I currently have 30mm conventional damping rod forks up front that have served me well up to this point.  A friend reworked them and added cartridge emulators, and for only having 2 inches of travel, they've done a phenominal job.  I've started exceeding their capibilities though, my machine can break 90mph and if I can get the motor dialed in properly I'm hoping to see 100mph.  (I'm also exploring mounting an Americchi Sprint 350 to get a 5 or 6 speed gearbox and some displacement so I can run the motor in a lower state of tune rather than spending as much time repairing as I do riding...)  If I dump at speed and slide into anything, those spindly 30mm units are going to fold up like a pretzel.

So, I'm in the market for a better front end, both for improved damping and adjustability/tuneability, as well as something that can handle more physical abuse.  I have 35mm inverted Marzocchis I've consdered pressing into service, but have gotten advice from multiple people I trust that I'd be better served putting money into 37mm Showas instead.  In order to use them I need to make sure that I can get the overall length down, and for road racing huge travel up front isn't a win anyways.

I agree, it's a ton of money I'll never be able to recoup... but I end up with a unique machine, and the ability to push it that much further on the track.  It's my choice of silly hobby, many don't get it and thats ok.

I may pick up an 85 for motard/rr conversion this spring also... in which case knowing there is someone who can cut the forks down for that application is handy as well.  I ride knee down rather than foot out, so getting a bike low is how I go fast.

Heh, I don't just want to crack 100mph, I want to do it with some authority! : )

(And yes, I'm a total nut job when it comes to minis.)

I got a chance to swing by Reynolds Motorsports last week and poke at some 85cc two strokes, including getting a couple quick measurements. The key measurement in my mind was the top of the lower clamp, to the bottom of the upper leg. Short of cutting new uppers, this distance defines how short the the front end can be. I measured 12", my existing NSR50 front end is setup so I'm running 13" from the top of the lower clamp to the axle, with 2.75" of total travel putting the lower at a half inch from the clamp at full compression... so it looks like this could be a non-starter.

Unless it would be possible to get shorter uppers made, but I can just imagine the cost there...

Actually, it'd be all lathe work, maybe it wouldn't be so bad... could also move the clamp points to account for my shorter stem... Time to talk to HPM again, and finish filing my taxes so I know what my budget will be.
